What I Do
A Product Designer with a strong technical background including extensive experience bridging the gap between design & development. I easily pair with engineering, product, marketing and stakeholders, while keeping a calm, reassuring presence throughout the storm. I have successfully shipped countless projects over the course of my career.
- Product Design
- Being involved in all aspects of product creation from early phase discovery, definition & competitive analysis, to translating goals to functional user experience, on into nurturing growth through iterative enhancement based off feedback, testing & continuous integration. Approximately 6 years experience.
- UX Design
- Beyond visuals, there is so much behind the scenes to goes into creating an useful & enjoyable experience. I have measurable experience in all aspects - usability testing, storyboards, wireframes, screen flows, site maps, personas, content development & competitive analysis. Approximately 15 years experience.
- UI Design
- One of my favorite design disciplines, I remember designing interfaces from an early age (someday I'll get design that cockpit dashboard for Starfleet). Dashboards, buttons, form controls and complete turnkey design systems - I speak fluent UI.
- Information Architecture
- As their first IA, I brought the practice of Information Architecture to Microsoft IT back in 2005, reigning in order amidst the chaos of a massive worldwide network of sites, labels, silos & groups. Thank you, Peter Morville. About 3-4 years experience, when combined & concatenated.
- Visual Design
- Building effective communications campaigns on a foundation of research, including qualitative, quantitative, polling, and message testing. Identifying core messages for specific audiences, and creating disciplined narratives and outreach strategies. 22+ years hard-earned experience.
- Motion Design
- At the expense of dating me, I was animating with 'DHTML', back before the days widespread .swf usage.
MacromediaAdobe Flash (and of course Actionscript) was a boon to the industry, bringing in a new generation of capabilities, and of course I rode that wave. Until Steve Jobs killed it (R.I.P. Flash). Lately I've been busy with GSAP, CSS3, Lottie Files & SVG. About the equivalent of 12 years experience, scattered throughout my career to-date. - Prototyping/Front-end Code
- A sweet spot for me. I love being able to bring my ideas to life with code. var leftBrain = require("@scope/rightBrain"). I did several stints as a full-time front-end developer, and still code on a weekly, if not daily basis. Bonus: I also speak CLI, DevOps & back-end (shh, don't tell anyone).
- UX Research
- Over the years I've help conduct a number of usability studies, crafted personas with Tamara Adlin, and have created numerous executive presentations, distilling research findings into actionable specifications, adding valuable context & insight to the design process.
- Competitive Analysis
- Research is fun. Am I getting paid to do this? Awesome. What problem are we solving? How have competitors succeeded or failed? How easy is onboarding, what barriers are there? Is it time to pivot? I've developed a unique system for distilling priorities, pros & cons, and missed opportunities. Happy to share.
